President Sauli Niinistö will attend the international Nuclear Security Summit in Washington on March 31-April 1, said an official press release. 
 
US President Barack Obama will host the summit.
 
The summit’s goal is reinforcing international cooperation to prevent nuclear terrorism. The actions of national authorities and the roles of international and institutional actions to improve nuclear security will be discussed in the meeting. 
 
Leaders from about 50 countries and international organisations are scheduled to attended he summit.
 
This summit concludes a series of summits that began on the initiative of President Obama in Washington in 2010. 
 
Finland has contributed to this process since the very beginning.
 
In addition to working sessions and discussions, the programme of the summit in Washington will include a dinner hosted by President Obama at the White House. 
 
Niinistö's programme also includes bilateral meetings and discussions with American researchers and representatives of think tanks.
 
Niinistö will visit Washington again in May, as he will be making an official visit to the United States together with other Nordic leaders.
