The components of the ruling three-party coalition are in disagreement with one another on some proposed changes to the alcohol law, reported the Finnish language daily Helsingin Sanomat.

According to the newspaper, the legal reform does not seem to proceed in line with the draft amended law published previously.

The Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party) is calling for further changes in the provisions for sales of alcohol at grocery stores.

In general, the Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) favours more liberal alcohol policies than the Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party).

The draft law drawn up under the supervision of Family Affairs and Social Services Minister Juha Rehula of the Keskusta does not propose any changes to retail sales times or beverage selections.

The parties are now negotiating about whether to raise the maximum alcohol concentration allowed in retail trade.

Meanwhile, Alko CEO Hille Korhonen has estimated that sales of wine in grocery stores would put a large number of Alko shops out of business.

Liquors with high concentrations of alcohol would still be sold at Alko.
