At least 75 wolves in the country were killed this winter. The number is higher than any time since the beginning of the last century. In the previous winter, 41 wolves were killed.

Hunters killed 43 wolves for population control and 25 were killed by special permission or inside reindeer herding areas. The remaining seven died in traffic accidents or were shot in defence or were found dead.

“More than half of the dead wolves over the winter were fully grown, reproductive individuals. It is a coincidence, but it can affect wolves’ reproduction negatively,” said Research Professor Ilpo Kojola of the Natural Resources Centre Luke.

Also, the number of wolves killed by hunters is exceptionally high.

Kojola estimates that Finland may again be taken to the EU Court for negligence in protecting wolves.

Wolves are an endangered species. In particular, it is estimated that there are already too few reproductive individuals in Finland. According to an estimate, there are currently 200-235 wolves in Finland.
