Veteran leader of ruling Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party) and long-term lawmaker and minister Nestori Kaasalainen has passed away. He was 101.

Party sources said that he died at the beginning of March.

Kaasalainen was the last of the prominent post-war politicians. He profiled as a representative of migrant Karelians as well as a supporter of Urho Kekkonen. Kaasalainen was elected MP for six times.

Keskusta MPs Antti Kaikkonen and Seppo Kääriäinen commented on Kaa-salainen's death on Twitter.

“Nestori knew how to slip humor into his messages,” Kääriäinen said.

“A good man, and good memories [of him] remain,” said Kaikkonen.

Kaasalainen was the agriculture minister in Rafael Paasio’s and Ahti Karjalainen’s governments from 1966-1971. After his MP career, he was the head administrator and a board member for Alko.

As chairman of the Alko management board, the teetotaler Kaasalainen prepared the implementation of the new law to sell medium-strength beer.

Kaasalainen’s death was first reported by Finnish language newspaper Tyrvään Sanomat on March 28.
