Prisoners will be allowed to use their debit cards starting this month. With the cards, prisoners can make purchases not only from the prison canteen, but also purchases outside the prison, from shops, cafes or trains, for example.

The prepaid card will be given to each inmate confined in prison. Open prisons will allow access to the cards for those whose cards are not connected with bank accounts.

According to the Criminal Sanctions Agency (Rise), the purpose is to practice using cards for payments while imprisoned. Rise will pay all benefits received by prisoners through the cards.

According to the law, prisoners in closed prisons may not keep possession of methods of payment, which is why the debit card will be held by prison staff, until the law changes for those prisoners. The prisoner may receive the card when paying or while on prison leave.
