The police are investigating into dozens of criminal suspicions against the online publication MV-lehti.

According to the police, the magazine has published many stories which are suspected of being untrue, distorted truths, or copyright infringement.

The reports on the offences have come from different parts of the country. The investigation is being coordinated by the Helsinki police.

The police will determine, along with prosecutors, whether the circumstances reported are criminal. The examination of the website and the indictment hearing requires that the police cooperate with the authorities from other countries.

All necessary and possibly international means to determine the criminal liabilities related to the MV-lehti will be used, the prosecutor general, Matti Nissinen told the news agency STT.

“This relates to legal aid and other issues, but we’re not going to throw our hands up in defeat just because someone is in Spain. I cannot comment in more details on the investigative tactics.”

According to Nissinen, the case should be carefully examined.

“With this publication, this is the first time we’re using criminal law considerations regarding freedom of speech. This relates to precedent.”
