Finance Minister Alexander Stubb, also the chairman of the Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party), believes that the policy differences between him and Interior Minister Petteri Orpo are minimal.

Talking to the national broadcaster Yle in its Ykkösaamu (morning breakfast) programme, Stubb said the race for the party chairmanship need to take advantage of the improving support for Kokoomus.

“I dare say we are pretty close in terms of policy,” said Stubb, also a former prime minister.

Stubb said he was starting the election from the rear position, but he believes he would receive aid from the party supporters.

Petteri Orpo is one of the contestants for the post of party chair. The Kokoomus parliamentary group has already given its support to Orpo, which seems like a snub to the sitting chairman.

Stubb thought his own conversational style of management sets him at risk of criticism.

“After all, it’s not very pleasant. Now, it’s great that we have an election for party chairman, and we can converse openly,” said the Kokoomus chief.

Stubb also said that he does not have a contingency plan, should he lose the race for the party chair.
