A suspected criminal sustained bullet wounds when police fired gunshot at him during a raid to arrest him in the Helsinki neighbourhood of Puotila on Friday, Helsinki police said.

Police said that the incident took place at about 11am when the suspect tried to escape by jump-ing from the balcony and also threatened the police with a bladed weapon and a gas spray.

The man resisted arrest and came forward threateningly towards the police prompting the law enforcers to fire gunshot for self-defense, the police claimed.

The man sustained bullet wounds in his leg and was taken to hospital.

The Helsinki Police General Director Teemu Lappalainen told news agency STT that there were plainclothes officers as well as uniformed police at the scene.

The investigation of the incident has been transferred to the Eastern Uusimaa Police Department.
