The Kainuu Border Guard on Friday arrested three French nationals suspected of crossing the border illegally.

According to the Border Guard, the three moved without permission to the Finnish side of the border zone at the Vartius border crossing point near Kuhmo from Russia.

They are also suspected of illegally crossing the border from Finland to Russia.

A pre-trial investigation will provide details on the unauthorised border crossings.

The Border Guard will announce the progress of the pre-trial investigation later.

The Russian border authorities have been notified of the possible border crossings.

Kainuu Border Guard General Director Major Esa Piiponniemi suspected that the people only crossed into the Russian side while they were moving in the border zone.

According to Piiponniemi, there are individual cases of violations from the Finnish side to the Russian side every year along the entire length of the border.

The General Director believes that if people move out of the Russian border zone and into Russia proper, they are guaranteed to be stuck there.

In this case, both Finnish and Russian authorities will examine the case evidence.

According to Piiponniemi, the Border Patrol found a locked parked car near the border zone where people were suspected of unauthorised movement.

Near the border, some people were moving, dressed in camouflage and carrying a camera.
