A devastative fire broke out in a residential hotel at Pori early Saturday causing a damage of several million euros, the hotel authorities said.

The Omena Hotel suffered from extensive water and smoke damage due to the fire, sources at fire services said.

Owner of the Omena Hotel property Ilkka Holmlund said he was shocked by the massive fire that took place on the 3rd to 6th floors of the building.

No human casualty, however, was reported.

The worst damage was done to the 6th floor, which was scheduled to open up for summer events.

“Water came through the window, 1.2 metres high across the entire 400 square metres of the floor,” Holmlund said.

The fifth floor suffered almost as bad, he added.

“Sorry for the bad joke, but there was a new spa attendance record there today,” said the hotel owner.

Holmlund estimated that the damage caused by the fire will cost several million euros. He is, however, relieved that insurance policies are in place.

“Because of insurance, there’s no immediate disaster. The greater regret comes from the loss of a considerable number of reservations for the Suomi Areena public debate and Pori Jazz festival events. That’s just not nice at all,” Holmlund said.
