Astronaut Timothy Kopra allowed Finns a glimpse into a day in life in space, when the Heureka Science Centre received a video call from the International Space Station (ISS).

People who came to participate in the video call wanted to know, among other things, what the most beautiful thing in space is and what is the most frightening.

According to Kopra, the most beautiful part is the oceans, the northern lights and thunderstorms.

He said thunderstorms can cover entire continents. In addition, he spoke of happily watching the Bahama Islands and coral reefs.

At the beginning of the call, the space station was over the South Pacific, and during the call, it had moved through Africa to Europe.

The northernmost point in the S-shaped route is Germany, and Kopra said he can sometimes see Helsinki from there.

Kopra said watching cities at night reminds him of how people live together in harmony.

Of fear, he said he was not aware of anything.

“Sometimes, I feel like I should be more afraid in space,” Kopra said over the video link.

He added that it’s more exciting [than frightening], for example, to perform a spacewalk. When he gets an incoming transmission detailing some operation, he just focuses on getting the job done.
