Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif said in Helsinki on Tuesday that Iran would seek long-term economic relationship with the outside world.

Zarif told reporters that the world’s interests in making business with Iran had been massive since the nuclear agreement came into force this spring. The agreement lifted the sanctions against Iran and opened the country’s market opportunities to the outside world.

Zarif said Iran did not seek a single trade but rather the long-term economic relationship with “the European and other friends of ours.”

The only obstacle, the foreign minister said, was European banks’ sensitivities to the financing arrangements.

Zarif visited Finland with a large business delegation on Tuesday. He said Iran and Finland had a lot of opportunities to promote trade ties.

During his visit, he discussed with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Timo Soini on bilateral relations, regional questions in the Middle East, relations between Iran and the European Union as well as other international issues.

He also met with President Sauli Sauli Niinistö and Speaker of Parliament Maria Lohela.

Meanwhile, the police arrested four human rights activists when they staged a demonstration against the Iranian government and threw eggs at the visiting Iranian foreign minister in Helsinki on Tuesday.

The police said a group of protesters numbering about 30 threw eggs at the Iranian foreign minister when he was passing through the road between his hotel and a convention centre.

They also blocked the flow of visitors into buildings.

The police grabbed two suspects that were throwing eggs. The police decided to move the demonstration away from the roadway, but some protesters refused to move.

Two other persons were arrested on suspicion of insubordination, and one of them was handcuffed.

According to the police, all the four arrests were made on the basis of the Police Act, and the protesters were taken to custody in Töölö.

In the police report, the throwing of eggs is recorded as having caused slight damage. Insubordination can result in a fine.
