Two Finnish electricity company’s power distribution systems were subject to attempted data theft, reported the Finnish language newspaper Savon Sanomat on Tuesday.

The newspaper reported that the attacks were targeted at the power distribution technology, in addition to the electricity companies’ office information systems.  According to the newspaper, attempts were made as well to steal data from the critical systems of Savon Voima and Kuopio Energy.

Kuopio Power CEO Kari Väänänen told the Savon Sanomat that the risk of cyber attacks is known to the industry’s companies, and work on the situation is in progress. According to Savon Voima Network CEO Matti Ryhänen, the company’s ongoing operations take the threat of cyber attacks into account.

According to the newspaper, Savon Voima has requested a cyber investigation into the attack.
