Around one hundred experts from various Nordic occupational safety and health authorities will meet at the three-day Nordic Working Environment Conference that begins on Tuesday in Tampere.

Representatives from Nordic research institutions are also expected to attend the event, according to a press release.

The theme for the conference is risk-based supervision of occupational safety and health.

“This is an opportunity to take a look at supervision of occupational safety and health in the Nordic countries and to achieve a better understanding of the education needs. It is very interesting to learn how people in other Nordic countries work with risk-based supervision,” says Birgitta Forsström, director of the Nordic Institute for Advanced Training in Occupational Health (NIVA).

NIVA will also be participating in the Tampere conference.

At the conference, different methods will be presented by which authorities are able to focus their supervision on such high-risk industries, workplaces and occupations where supervision is highly needed and likely to achieve results.

Occupational safety and health authorities supervise compliance with OSH regulations at workplaces.

Supervision is more effective when focused on specific high-risk industries and workplaces.

In Norway and Denmark for example, research institutions have developed work environment indicators and procedures for the purpose of charting risks and sharing information, says the release.

Finland arranges the working environment conference in Tampere as part of the programme for its presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers 2016.

The conference aims for dialogue and sharing of information and good examples between the Nordic countries in themes related to risk-based supervision of occupational safety and health.

NIVA is another forum for Nordic cooperation in the area of working environment issues.

Founded by the Nordic Council of Ministers in 1982, NIVA is primarily a knowledge sharing forum in working environment-related matters.

It organises courses, symposiums, workshops and seminaries on working environment themes.
