A Danish helicopter suspected of violating the Finnish airspace was sighted in the southwest late Wednesday.

According to Ministry of Defence Communications Director Max Arhippainen, it was a short airspace violation, but he could not reveal the exact duration of the incident.

Arhippainen also had no information about why the helicopter was in the area.

At the moment the international BALTOPS 2016 military exercise is going on in the area, which may be related to the violation.

Denmark is not participating in the exercise. Finland, Sweden, the US, the Netherlands, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Germany are all participants.

Arhippainen did not say whether Finnish aircraft intercepted the helicopter or whether its transponder was on.

The Border Guard has begun investigation into the incident.
