Former lawmaker Sulo Aittoniemi, who served as an Member of Parliament for a long term has passed away. He was 79.
 
Aittoniemi died on Thursday in Tampere after a sudden illness, said his son Janne Aittoniemi to news agency of his father's passing.
 
Sulo Aittoniemi worked as a lawmaker from 1987 to1999, first for Suomen Maaseudun Puolue (Finnish Rural Party-SMP) and later as an MP for Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party).
 
In 1999-2003, he was the sole representative of a Keskusta group he established.
 
Aittoniemi is remembered for his diligence and colourful opinions. His criticisms of immigration came under a lot of scrutiny, and many of his speeches were the subjects of police investigation requests.
 
Aittoniemi was also the SMP presidential candidate in 1994, and he received the winning amount of votes for Keskusta in the 1999 parliamentary elections.
