President Sauli Niinistö on Monday defended the impending visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Finland, saying those surprised at the visit are behind the times.

The president made the remarks during the second day of discussion on foreign and security policy being held at his summer residence Kultaranta in Naantali responding to the remarks of Swedish Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee Deputy Chair Karin Enström.

Karin Enström during the security panel discussion said the Swedes find it somewhat difficult to understand the forthcoming Putin’s visit.

“I have heard criticism – although it has gone for many years – some voices from Baltic, now apparently from Sweden. In my view, you are a little bit behind times,” said Niinistö.

The president said he has heard from different quarters of the world that communication with the Russian leadership is important.

Putin will visit Finland in July.

The second day of the discussion in Naantali focused on foreign policy where the issue of Baltic Area security and the future of the European Union were discussed.
