President Sauli Niinistö on Wednesday said the recent actions of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are clearly an elimination of dissidents from public administration.

Talking to the commercial broadcaster MTV in an interview, Niinistö also said there is no question that most of the dissidents have already been cleared of having participated in the military coup.

The president believes Turkey will not meet European standards, if the country restores the death penalty.

He said he had discussed human rights issues with Erdogan every time they have met.

“I think his behaviour is a clear indicator that he has not taken anything from our discussions,” said Niinistö.

The president urged the European Union to closely monitor how relations between Turkey and Russia are possibly progressing.
