Mon, 08 Aug, 2016 01:22:57 AM FTimes-STT Report, Aug 8 File Photo Lehtikuva. The number of drowning victims in Finland this year has been comparatively lower than the usual, said the Finnish Association for Swimming Instruction and Life Saving (SUH).
According to the available statistics, 66 people had drowned in Finland till the end of July.
The darkest year of this decade in this respect was 2014 in which 98 people had drowned in the first seven months till the end of July.
SUH draws preliminary statistics on drowning based on press monitoring. Official figures on the causes of deaths come later via Statistics Finland.
In general, weather has an impact on the number of drowning victims, as colder summers cause fewer drowning.
However, this summer has not been particularly colder or wetter than the usual.
SUH Director Kristiina Heinonen believes the lower figures can be attributed to a change in Finnish attitude to water safety.
