The erection of posters and signboards by the side of roads and railways will become more easier when new law comes into force on Monday.

Senior officer of the Ministry of Transporter and Communication Eeva Ovaska said that in future posters may be erected by the roadside as long as the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centre) is notified in advance.

“Previously erection of advertisement and notices by the side of the roads was in principle pro-hibited but still it was possible to get an exemption,” said Ovaska.

Notification regarding billboards has to be submitted to the Pirkanmaa Ely Centre which handles nationwide advertisement notifications.

The properties and location of the advertisement must conform with the environment and should not endanger traffic safety.

If these conditions are not met, the Ely Centre has the authority to impose ban on the erection of advertisements within 30 days.

Temporary notifications such as election campaigning posters and wedding sign posts will in the future continue to be erected by the road side without notice.

Temporary notifications can be erected a month prior to the event, and must be removed after one week of the event.

Similarly, temporary sign posts should not endanger road safety.
