Two cargo trains collided in Oulu rail yard near Säveltäjänkatu street on Saturday afternoon.

The accident took place when one cargo train laden with timbers knocked down another cargo train from the behind at about 5.00pm leading to the derailment of a locomotive and three car-riages.

"The locomotive is leaning next to the rails, and the wagons have fallen in a heap. The cargoes will be towed, but this is a big operation since the rolling stock is massive," said the on duty Fire Fighter Chief, Kimmo Virkkala.

One of the train drivers was injured slightly and was taken to the Oulu University Hospital.

Both trains were occupied only by the drivers.

According to Virkkala, both trains were transporting timber.

Traffic was cut off at the scene of the accident. The accident also led to broken power lines and power failure.

"Passenger traffic will be guided towards another path so that there will be no deviation. Freight traffic may experience delay since the track is cut off," Virkkala said.

The Accident Investigation Board is examining the cause of the accident.
