Interior Minister Paula Risikko on Sunday asked clarification from the Immigration Services (Migri) about its decisions to reject asylum applications of a number of human trafficking victims.

At a discussion with the Immigration Services, the minister drew attention to a news report which said Migri had sent a number of Nigerian women who were victims of trafficking and brutal violence in their country back to Nigeria or Italy.

The report was run by the news outlet Long Play which explored 25 of the secret asylum decisions.

The minister termed the report shocking and asked Migri to explain the decisions.

According to the law, the authorities cannot reveal individual details, but the minister was informed about the general decision-making.

“I want to hear which laws influence the decisions and how they operate in such cases, especially when it is a very serious and unique situation,” Risikko said.

The majority of the women did not receive a residence permit, even though Migri admitted that they were victims of human trafficking and even if they had small children with them, said the news report.

A Long Play reporter met with two of the women in Italy, who have had to return to the streets as prostitutes.

According to the publication, Migri does not know what happened to the returned women and children.

The Long Play report also said that the women have not been able to obtain any assistance, for example from Human Trafficking organisations.
