Violent extremism is rare in Finland, claims the interior ministry.

The ministry, however, has admitted that a large number of asylum seekers arriving in Finland were affected by violent extremist activities.

According to the data derived from the interior ministry’s situational review, violent extremism in relation to criminal offences is relatively scarce.

The term violent extremism is used around the world to define violence used with threats to encourage or justify an ideology.

The interior ministry’s data for last year shows a total of 62 crime suspects whose offences fulfil the definition of violent extremism.

More than half, or 33, of the suspects were connected to right-wing extremist activities.

Most of the offences, 17, were of ill-treatment and abuse, 11 of which were connected to the far-right.

The second highest offences, numbering 12, were made in connection with insubordination. Of these, 11 were connected to the far-left, which involved a total of 16 persons under criminal suspicion.
