Pirkko Mattila to become new minister
FTimes – STT Report, Aug 17

Mäntylä, also a lawmaker of the Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party), the second largest component of the three-party ruling alliance, announced her resignation at a press conference on Tuesday.

Mäntylä said she has decided to resign on purely personal ground, as her loved one fell ill in the spring.

“It was a moment and an issue that halted me to think about what kind of a relative I want to be,” said Mäntylä.

Mäntylä also revealed that she has been a single mother for her children for a long time. One of her two children has already left home, but the other still lives with her.

“As it will fit the president’s schedule, I will give my resignation request as soon as possible,” Mäntylä said.

The outgoing minister also said she informed the party chief, Timo Soini, about the decision and the new minister is already being introduced to the post.

Meanwhile, Soini announced the name of Pirkko Mattila as the new minister of social affairs and health and said the party policies regarding the ongoing social services and healthcare reform would not be altered by the change of minister.

“It became clear to me that there is no going back. I know Pirkko Mattila very well since a long time. She will be facing a very hard and demanding task,” Soini said.

Pirkko Mattila in a press briefing at the party office said she is ready to taking up the responsibility as a minister.
