FTimes-STT Report, Aug 26

The interior ministry has announced that applications for Finnish identity cards could be submitted electronically like passports.

The new law on identity cards will be effective from the beginning of next year.

The new law will be applicable also for the Finnish citizens living abroad. In the future, Finnish embassies will be able to issue ID cards to Finnish citizens living abroad.

Currently, the Finnish police are the only authority to issue the identity cards.

In addition, foreigners’ ID cards can be granted to all who have been given residence permit and a home municipality.

This will help integration of those given the permit.

The changes are aimed to make bureaucracy more fluent and the administrative work more efficient.
