Tampere City Mayor Anna-Kaisa Ikonen on Monday said the city council is going to decide the future operations of the Särkänniemi dolphinarium in a board meeting.

The city council on Monday received a situational review report from the Särkäniemi chief executive officer on transfer of the dolphins to Greece on Saturday night.

Ikonen did not comment on the contents of the review or the possible future continuation of the amusement park’s operations.

According to Ikonen, the communication regarding the transfer did not succeed in the best possible way. In the future, it must be ensured that such situation does not occur, he added.

“This is a situation which should be learnt from,” said the mayor.

The Särkänniemi board has continued discussing the matter on Tuesday.

The chair of the board, Sofia Vikman MP on Monday did not make any comment about the matter and neither did Vikman respond to a STT call request.

Vikman on Sunday said she had called for a general meeting to examine their communication policy and admitted that the manner of communication had failed badly.

There have been claims in the public that the Särkänniemi board was aware of the secret transfer of the dolphins.

Ikonen believes the board on Tuesday at the latest will reveal the kind of the review they have received and the conclusions reached.

The mayor said she had been kept informed about the date of the transfer, but was not aware of the exact timing of the dolphins’ transfer.

Ikonen, however, considered the concealment justified.

“[The transfer] was done with good intention, but the overall picture was not considered,” she said.

Särkänniemi dolphins Leevi, Delfi, Veera, and Eevertti were transferred in secret to the Attica Park dolphinarium near Athens in Greece late Saturday night, sparking strong criticism from various quarters.
