Prime Minister Juha Sipilä on Sunday said the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) need not to feel pressure from the government’s side to make negative decisions on asylum cases.

In an interview with the national broadcaster Yle, the PM said he trusts that the courts will correct any “wrong” decisions made by immigration.

“We have made our policy on immigration issues very clear. We have examined the practices of other Nordic countries, and we follow them closely,” said Sipilä.

Migri has decided that future Iraqi asylum seekers may not receive asylum simply because they come from a specific region.

In a statement in May, Migri said the security situation in Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia has improved.

Asylum seekers from these countries will find it more difficult in the future to get international protection from Finland. In addition, humanitarian protections were removed from the Aliens Act.

Finance Minister Petteri Orpo, also a former interior minister, told the Finnish language newspaper Helsingin Sanomat on Sunday that Migri determined the policies concerning security situations on its own.

“No one is [pressuring Migri], and it’s a sacred thing. This is how I feel,” Orpo told the newspaper.

Orpo also denied that Migri would be subject to political pressure.

The Helsingin Sanomat published a report where Migri’s officials said the drastic performance targets had undermined the quality of decisions.

The present interior minister, Paula Risikko told the news agency STT that the quality of asylum decisions will not be eroded.

The minister will visit the Immigration Service in mid-September when she also plans to point out the work well-being of Migri employees.

“The ministry and Migri are in constant interaction, and the situation of the agency as well as the large number of applications has been known,” Risikko said.

The interior minister will also determine whether the pressure on the Immigration Service can be diminished in some way.
