Finland will not be signing a new temporary border agreement with Russia, Interior Minister Paula Risikko told the Finnish language newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.

The reason, according to the minister, is that the border situation has become stable again.

But, Aleksanteri Institute Director Professor Markku Kivinen expressed surprise that a new agreement is not currently being negotiated.

According to Kivinen, the basic reasons behind the six-month agreement still exist.

The agreement has prevented uncontrolled entry through the Salla and Raja-Jooseppi border-crossing points.

Kivinen pointed out that, by European standards, the refugee crisis continues, and now is not the time to be lulled into thinking otherwise.

The current agreement with Russia ends in October.

From last November to February, more than 1,700 refugees entered Finalnd across the eastern border.

The number surprised Finland, as in the past, Russia had blocked migrants without papers from access to the border.
