Tue, 13 Sep, 2016 12:00:13 AM FTimes – STT Report, Sep 13 Otanmäki refugee reception center in Kajaani. Photo – Lehtikuva. Two Iraqi asylum seekers were arrested on suspicion of murder and robbery in Kajaani, police said on Monday.
A 52-year-old local man was found dead on Sunday morning at Otanmäki in Kajaani.
Police suspected that he was killed in robbery.
In addition, a 41-year-old native man was robbed on Sunday night.
Detective Chief Inspector of Kainuu police Jarkko Maksniemi said that the suspects are both asylum seekers who lived at the Otanmäki refugee reception centre.
The police official, however, did not give detail information about the suspects.
Red Cross’s Oulu district administrator Ari Haaranen told news agency STT that both men arrived in Finland last year. The Red Cross runs the Otanmäki reception centre.
“The men have been in Finland approximately one year,” Haaranen said.
Haaranen did not know the age or the place where in Iraq the men came from.
He did not confirm social media rumours that the men had been refused asylum.
Haaranen considers the incident to be unfortunately heinous, but not related to the system or its functionality.
“Otanmäki is a small and peaceful reception centre, where things have worked well. However, there is still uncertainty, as we do not have more detailed information on the matter,” Haaranen said.
Otanmäki reception centre houses about 120 people, including families, children and single adults. The majority of them have arrived in Finland from Iraq and Afghanistan.
According to national broadcaster Yle, Otanmäki's alertness level has risen due to doubt about the death.
Finnish Immigration Service reception unit director Jorma Kuuluvainen said that the incident has been discussed among residents and staff.
Discussions have shown that Otanmäki residents are ready to condemn the acts of the two suspected Iraqis.
