He emphasised in particular the rights of children and women refugees and immigrants. According to the president, too many of them fall victim to violence and crimes.
He said most of these flows stem from man-made conflicts and stressed that the management of the refugee flow and the uncontrolled movement of population must be dealt with the root causes of the migration.
More efforts are needed in order to prevent and resolve conflicts, prevent forced migration as well as facilitate voluntary and safe return of refugees to their home countries.
“People should have the opportunity to have a lasting peace, economic growth and positive future prospects. Central to this is the promotion of human rights, rule of law and promotion of good governance,” said Niinistö.
The president also pointed out that migration is not just a problem but rather it has always been one of the key factors in development.
Controlled, safe, steady and responsible migration is a resource which, according to the president, can be of use.
Niinistö also condemned racist acts during the recent period in the country.
The violent act which occurred at the Helsinki Centre Railway Station should not be accepted, the president told a press conference in connection with the UN refugee summit in New York. “The incident is shockingly tragic. My deepest condolences.”
