Two suspects, a 41-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man, were on Thursday read their charges of human trafficking for aggravated deprivation of liberty of a small boy in a stirring case of human trafficking which came to light last year.

The duo is suspected of hiding the boy for more than 1.5 years from his mother. The child was finally found in a summer rental cottage in Tampere.

Prosecutor Leena Koivuniemi did not say at the beginning of the trial the punishment she is seeking. The indictment specified aggravated deprivation of liberty, because, according to her, the child was in the couple’s possession for a long time.

The proceedings at the Pirkanmaa District Court happened behind closed doors. However, defendants’ assistants said during the break that their clients had contested the charges. The defendants claim they had possession of the boy only occasionally.
