Tue, 27 Sep, 2016 12:06:30 AM FTimes – STT Report, Sep 27 Four apartment houses in Seinäjoki were burnt in fire on September 19, 2016. File Photo – Lehtikuva. At least six people have died so far in fire incidents in the country in September.
In September of last year, there were three deaths caused by fires, while the September in the year before also saw six deaths.
The annual number of fire deaths fluctuates randomly and does not have any particular cause, said Ilpo Leino of the Finnish National Rescue Association (SPEK).
“There is no season in which more people die from fire-related causes than any other season. Building fires, though, happen in the dark season and at New Year. A clear wave is evident dur-ing autumn and the change of the year, when people lit candles and the likes (of candles),” Leino said.
The number of building fires is not directly linked to the number of deaths in fires.
“This says in part that fire fatalities are random and do not have a causal link with any other ac-tivity,” said Leino.
