The accommodation capacity at reception centres will be reduced by more than 2,000 beds by the end of March 2017, announced the Finnish Immigration Service on Wednesday.

The Immigration Service on Wednesday informed the reception centres of new terminations of contracts.

According to the Immigration Service, the reduced need for accommodation in 2017 is the reason behind the adjustment.

The Immigration Service said it is expensive to maintain unnecessary accommodation capacity and that is why the goal is to keep the number of beds as close to the real demand as possible at all times.

Those in charge of the reception centres will carry out employee cooperation negotiations with the staff at the centres, said the Immigration Service in the statement.

There were 23,000 beds at the reception centres as at the time of the announcement.

Following earlier decision, the number of beds will be reduced already in the autumn and winter by approximately 7,000
