The number of hate crimes in Finland has increased significantly, said Interior Ministry Director (Police) Sanna Heikinheimo.

Talking to the Finnish language newspaper Keskisuomalainen, she said hate crimes are no longer individual incidents but a growing phenomenon.

According to preliminary data from the ministry, the increase in hate crimes is apparent compared to last year’s report.

The report from the Police College will be published in the autumn.

All cases are not linked to the violent extremism that has been in the media in recent days.

Heikinheimo said the police have the capacity to stop the increase in hate crimes as long as funding is adequate.

The director said the government recently decided in its strategy meeting to direct additional funding for research on hate crimes, including, among other things, an increased presence of online police officers.
