The Vantaa District Court on Tuesday sentenced one person to 13-year imprisonment for smuggling drugs.

According to the court verdict, the 45-year-old man smuggled thousands of kilograms of various drugs including hashish, cocaine, heroin and amphetamine within Europe together with an accomplice.

The crimes took place in Spain, Holland, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Britain, Norway, Sweden, Italy, and Finland.

The man had smuggled drugs into Finland six times, trafficking altogether 123 kilograms of hashish, 20 kilograms of amphetamine, and one kilogram of cocaine.

According to the court, the man had acted as a courier for an organised drug gang and acted as per the assignment given by the gang.

The convict told the court that he was forced into the criminal group as a result of violent threats made against him and people close to him.

The court observed that it is likely that there had been pressure behind the criminal activity, but there was no clear evidence of such pressure.
