Syrian conflict discussed

President Sauli Niinistö made separate telephone calls to Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday and Wednesday night and discussed various issues including the current crisis in Syria.
 
Niinistö expressed deep concern to Putin about the Syrian crisis, especially the human suffering in Aleppo and the killing of civilians.
 
In addition, the presidents of the two neighbouring countries discussed the situation in Ukraine and the Minsk agreement, among other things.
 
Niinistö spoke with Chancellor Merkel on Wednesday night. The Office of the President in a statement described the call as a serious discussion.
 
Niinistö and Merkel discussed Syria and in particular the catastrophic situation in Aleppo and what could be done to end the human suffering.
 
The leaders also discussed Ukraine and the Minsk agreement.
