The Helsinki District Court on Thursday ordered the founder of MV-lehti, an anti-immigrant fake news website, to be arrested.

District Prosecutor Heikki Wendorf relayed the matter to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) after a European arrest warrant was issued against the Chief Editor of MV-lehti, Ilja Janitskin.

Wendorf expressed the hope that the matter can move forward as soon as possible. The duration of the whole case is difficult to estimate in his view.

“There are [EU] member states, where the process only takes a few weeks, but there are member countries where it takes longer,” Wendorf said.

Janitskin is suspected of, among other things, making agitation against an ethnic group, aggravated defamation, money collection offences, illegal threats, and copyright offences.

The accused was not in the court during the hearing. He reportedly runs the MV-lehti publication from Spain.

Janitskin’s lawyer Matti Nurmela called the remand decision unreasonable, because, according to him, Janitskin could be cross-examined, for example, over phone.

Wendorf said the detention is necessary because of the totality of the criminal case, but he did not further clarify the secret matter.

The MV-lehti has been accused of publishing unfounded or distorted news items. Local media has also claimed that the MV-lehti backs the neo-Nazi group Finnish Resistance Movement.

The police cannot question Janitskin, because he is believed to be living in Spain now, according to local media reports.
