FTimes – STT Report, Oct 23

The Ministry of Justice is considering a total ban on child marriages in the country, reported Finnish language news consortium Lännen Media.

The Ministry can currently give consent for a minor to marry due to "special reasons".

According to Lännen Media, in almost all cases those wishing marriage with a minor, are women, and often the cause is pregnancy.

The Ministry of Justice stated that applications have reduced annually, to just a few.

For example, in the 1980's, there were over a hundred per year, but in the last year, there were only thirteen marriages to a minor.

Justice Minister Jari Lindström evaluated that a potential application of a complete ban would be decided by Parliament at the start of next year.

Last year the UN Human Rights Council  recommended that all countries prohibit child marriage.
