Finland exported arms and military hardware worth about 99 million euros in 2015, according to the latest annual report by peace and security think tank SaferGlobe.

The figure for the arms export is about 10 million more than the average during the 2000s.

Last year was also the first since the compliment of the statistics began in 2002 that the European Union has not been the most significant destination for Finnish arms export.

In 2011, Finnish military-related exports to the EU accounted to just under half of all the exports.

In 2014, Finnish arms exports were worth about 223 million euros, and 230 arms export licenses were granted during the year.

According to SaferGlobe, significant armoured vehicle exports to Sweden are behind the figure.

In 2013 and 2014, armoured vehicles worth about more than 100 million euros were exported to Sweden.

In 2015, armoured vehicles and grenade launchers were the most sold military hardware from Finland. Finland arm exports also included protective gears.

Middle East emerged as the most significant export area in 2015.

The second most significant area was the Sub-Saharan Africa owing to the exports of armoured vehicles to South Africa.

Patria manufactured AMV armoured vehicles and armoured vehicle parts such as firearm control system and precision rifles were exported to South Africa.

The value of exports to Saudi Arabia was at around 30 million euros.

Exports to South Africa was just under 29 million euros. The Saudis bought Patria made grenade launchers among other things.

SaferGlobe believes that the market outside Europe has become significant for the Finnish de-fence industry.

The increase of arms expenditure in Middle East and Asia as well as in Europe in the future may increase the demand for Finnish military products in different market areas.

Finland also exported military materials to Poland, Norway, Turkey and Sweden.
