Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) lawmaker Teuvo Hakkarainen has been indicted for incitement to racial hatred.

The charge is related to Hakkarainen’s Facebook posts in which he wrote, among other things, "Not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims."

Hakkarainen wrote the post in July after the terrorist attack in Nice, France.

According to a statement by the prosecutor’s office, Hakkarainen’s words slander and threaten Muslims based on their religion.

“Even an MP’s freedom of speech does not extend to hate speech, which [in this case] is directed toward all Muslims,” said Deputy Prosecutor Raija Toiviainen in a statement.

Hakkarainen, however, denied having committed any crime during police interrogation. He said on Tuesday that the indictment was a surprise.

The Finns Party parliamentary group has not yet taken a position on the matter.
