The police shot a man carrying a gun early Wednesday morning in Joensuu.

The emergency rescue centre was informed at around 4.00 a.m. of a man behaving strangely, possibly with a gun.

The police found the man in Reijola, Joensuu and ordered him to lay down his weapon.

According to the police, the 33-year-old local resident did not obey the commands but approached the police in a threatening manner.

The police shot at the man as he threatened to harm himself with the gun, said the police.

The man was taken to hospital. According to police information, he does not have life-threatening injuries.

The investigation into the incident is being led by the Salpausselä prosecutor’s office and the incident is being investigated by the Häme police.

The police have fired their weapons on multiple occasions this year. The most recent incident was in October in Mikkeli, when the police shot a man in the leg in the national railway operator VR-Group’s warehouse area. The shooting in Mikkeli is now under pre-trial investigation.

This year, three people have died as a result of the police shooting. The incidents occurred in February in Tuusula, in March in Petäjävesi, and along Highway 4 in Orimattila in October.

According to statistics from the Police University College (Polamk), in the past 10 years, the police have shot dead a total of seven people. This number includes October’s shooting in Orimattila.
