The local people in Kauniainen strongly opposed the initiative of setting up a reception centre for unaccompanied underage refugees at Kauniainen municipality, reported Finnish commercial broadcaster MTV.

The Kauniainen municipality authority earlier earmarked the house at Yrjö Liippolantie 14 for the refugee centre.

The issue came to the light when Deaconess institute of Helsinki applied for a temporary change of use of residential real estate.

The plan has created resentment among the locals particularly the residents at the neighbouring houses and they submitted a written complaint to the municipality authority against the initiative.

The neighbours have complained that the residence is too elegant, and have also complained about security in the area.

The mayor of Kauniainen Christoffer Masar expressed surprise at how strongly residents had objected to the establishment of the refugee centre.

The mayor also expects that the stand of opposing the reception centre to be changed.

The building is planned to be used as a group family home for underage refugees with residence permit who have arrived to Finland without a guardian.

The authority planned to accommodate a group of children from seven to nine years or youth until they turn into 18 years old.
