A fire on Saturday night damaged six cars, two of them gutted, parked close together in a parking lot of an Espoo apartment complex.
The fire chief on duty, Mika Mäkelä of the Western Uusimaa Rescue Services said the fire seems to originate from the engine compartment of one car and spread via the wind to the other cars.
In Mäkelä’s estimation, the cause of the fire is not arson, although he stresses that the possibility cannot be ruled out at this early stage.
“Now that the sub-zero temperature has come, cars are heating up much and more often. The risk of fires in the car increases, unless the owner of the car carefully places the inside heater and makes sure that air circulation is not prevented,” Mäkelä said.
