A middle-aged woman was burnt to death while trying to rescue her pet dog stuck in a terraced house at Pietarsaari in Ostrobothnia that caught fire in the early hours on Monday.

According to the police, the couple who live in the house managed to escape the fire; however, the woman went back into the house to save her dog.
 
Both the woman and the dog were killed in the fire and the house was completely destroyed.

The fire broke out in the four-bedroom terraced house along Kirkkoväärtintie at about 1.00 a.m.
 
Less than 10 inhabitants were evacuated from the houses, said the chief fire fighter on duty.
 
The fire brigade managed to prevent the fire from spreading, however, the fire affected the neighbouring buildings leading to evacuation of their residents.
 
According to the police, the neighbouring houses suffered mainly water and smoke damage. The police are investigating the cause of the fire.
