About 2,000 litres of milk from a milk van tank spilled on the asphalt on Saturday morning in Mynämäki, southwest Finland.

The spread of the milk to the environment was prevented after it was sucked by a vacuum truck, said the chief fire fighter, Olli Suominen.

The wintry weather, icy weather and asphalt prevented the milk’s spread to the environment and the soil.

Such huge amount of spilled milk is poisonous to the environment, water bodies and fish, Suominen said.

One thousand litres of milk corresponds to daily municipal waste load of 3,000 people, Suominen explained.

The accident happened when the driver forgot to switch off the overfill when filling the milk tank.

“He thought that 7,000 litres would fill the tank. Instead, 9,000 litres was pumped in. So it was calculated that 2,000 litres [had leaked],” said Suominen.
