FTimes – STT Report, Nov 17

The Espoo District Court on Wednesday sentenced the former executive director of the Bensow Children’s Home Foundation to one year and four months of conditional imprisonment.

Matts Olof Valter Gadolin was convicted for an aggravated accounting offence, two felony counts of tax evasion, and abuse of a position of trust.

According to the court, the former director, among other things, gave incorrect information to the tax authorities and decided to pay fees to a limited company account effectively under his control. In addition, he failed to inform the authorities about, among other things, his telephone, automobile and housing benefits.

According to the court’s verdict, a company under control of the 74-year-old director received payments sent as value-added tax rather than personal salary. According to the indictment, the duties paid to the director totalled 200,000 euros that were paid to a limited liability account and recorded as sales subject to VAT for the years 2009 to 2012.

“Gadolin was aware of all the circumstances of his salary payments, which he must have known were incorrect,” the court said in its verdict.

Gadolin informed the tax authorities of too low wages from 2008 to 2012.
