Some of the Helsinki Evangelical Lutheran churches will open their doors to the homeless starting on 21 November.
The aim of the initiative is to support the homeless people in municipalities by giving them a place to spend a night.
The churches in Helsinki will take turns from Monday to keep open their doors for the homeless from 9:00 p.m. to 7.00 a.m.
The Lauttasaari church, St. Paul’s Church, St. Matthew’s Church, Vartiokylä church, Kallio church, and Malmi church will be accommodating the homeless during the cold spell.
It has been decided that the arrangement will continue until the end of the year. Afterwards, the decision to continue further will be decided by every church independently.
The initiative also invites volunteers. The churches said Helsinki residents have enlisted in plenty to receive the homeless and supervise their night rest.
