Ensio Simonen, a native of Rovaniemi, was accorded the provincial voluntary rescuer award 2016.

The voluntary rescue service Vapepa that confers the recognition handed over the award in conjunction with Northern Finland Vapepa forum to Simonen in Pikku-Syöte on November 26 Saturday.

Simonen has been an active and committed member of the Automobile and Touring Club of Finland (ATCF) road service and also of Vapepa since 1999.

As the chairperson of the ATCF’s Arctic Circle Department, he is responsible for running the road service operations in Lapland.

Simonen has also participated in Vapepa emergency activities as a member of Tuikku-group.

Such activities, for instance, included reception of asylum seekers in last autumn and winter and sorting donated clothes.

Simonen is also a member of Vapepa provincial committee and Rovaseutu local committee.

Vapepa network is made up of 52 different organisations, whose voluntary groups alert the authorities in demanding situations. In most cases, Vapepa is alerted to help the police find missing persons.

Trained volunteers are needed in tasks such as large-scale evacuations and follow-up care in case of fire breakouts. About 1,500 emergency groups are involved in the work of Vapepa in different parts of the country.
