The Helsinki District Court on Thursday sentenced the former head of the Helsinki anti drug unit police, Jari Aarnio to 10 years’ imprisonment in various charges including drugs and abusing official power.

The court found him guilty in importing importation of a barrel containing nearly 800 kilograms of hashish from the Netherlands and its distribution between 2011 and 2012, reported national broadcaster Yle..

The court found that Aarnio played a central role in the drug ring and was therefore found guilty on five counts of aggravated drug offences.

The 10 year-prison sentence was handed down for the five drug crimes in addition to 17 other offences, including official misconduct, threatening a suspect and aggravated evidence tampering, said the report.

Earlier, in state prosecutors demanded Jari Aarnio be given a thirteen-year sentence on drug crimes.

The court ordered to take the former police officer into custody immediately.

Aarnio, however, claimed himself innocent during the trial.
