Minister of Foreign Affair Timo Soini on Wednesday strongly condemned the announcement by North Korea that it had carried out a hydrogen bomb test.

The nuclear test by North Korea once again seriously violated its international obligations not to develop and test nuclear weapons and UN Security Council resolutions 1718, 1874, 2087 and 2094 as well as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Safeguards Agreement, said a foreign ministry press release.

Finland fully agrees with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini’s statement on the matter.

Finland urged North Korea to refrain from additional actions that undermine the stability and security of the Korean Peninsula or increase tensions in the area.

Furthermore, Finland called on North Korea to fully comply with its international obligations and abandon its nuclear programme.

In addition, Finland urged North Korea to commit to close cooperation with the international community, including collaboration with the IAEA and participation in the Six-Party Talks aimed at its nuclear disarmament through negotiations.
